The Canadian Centre for Cyber Security (Cyber Centre) is hosting GeekPeek, an unclassified hackathon for graduate and undergraduate students from Canadian post-secondary institutions on December 13-17, 2021.
For five days, students will work together in teams and directly with Cyber Centre professionals on problems related to machine learning applied to cyber security, network traffic analysis, cyber threat hunting, malware reversing, or programming. At the end of GeekPeek, each team will present their projects and results to a panel of judges.
Students are invited to propose projects related to cyber security that they wish to work on. The Cyber Centre will also provide a list of open source datasets for all applicants to use for their work.
Event timeline
- September 2021: Registration starts
- October 20, 2021: Registration closes
- December 13, 2021: Virtual event starts
- December 14-15, 2021: Work session
- December 16, 2021: Presentation preparation
- December 17, 2021: Closing ceremony where students present their projects in front of a panel of experts

GeekPeek will be an entirely virtual event.
Who can apply?
Undergraduate and graduate students from Canadian post-secondary institutions, as well as students who graduated in 2020, from fields related to computer sciences and programming, computer networks, data analysis and manipulation, or who have an interest in cyber security.
Applicants are encouraged to register as a team of five. Participants can register individually but will be matched with others to form a team.
The event has a limited capacity of 50 participants, so we encourage you to submit your application as soon as possible.
There is no registration fee for GeekPeek.
Priority will be given to students who are eligible for the Federal Student Work Experience Program.
How do presentations work?
Teams will have 30 minutes to present their projects and results (20 minutes for presentation, 10 minutes for questions). The projects will be evaluated based on the originality of the idea, richness of content, how well the idea can be deployed in an operational environment, and the quality of the final presentation.
Additionally, before the presentation, each team is expected to record a 3-5 minute video presenting their project and results, which will be screened during the closing ceremony.
